Graystone Tractor Services Lawn and Garden Preparation
If you have an existing poor quality lawn or overgrown area that you are looking to re-purpose, we can help make it happen. For lawn replacement, we usually will grind up your old lawn area using our rototiller, adding a layer of topsoil is usually the next step, followed by seeding and light raking. Provided the outside temperature is greater than 50 degrees, you can then keep the area moist using a sprinkler and in 2 weeks or so, you will have a new lawn emerging. We usually recommend a light fertilizing at the time of seeding.
If you are wanting to re-purpose a section of your property for vegetable or flower garden, we can help make it a reality by clearing it off, returning it to a raw dirt state that is ready for spring planting. In some cases, importation of topsoil is necessary.

Frequently asked questions:

We can help get you on the road to a lush, green lawn very quickly. Our standard approach would be to

1. Use our rototiller attachment on your existing lawn, which would grind up the root system of your old grass and weeds and leave behind a mixture of dirt and mulch.

2. The second step would be to spread a couple inches of quality topsoil over the rototilled area.

3. The third step when the outdoor temperature is 50 degrees or above, would be to re-seed the topsoiled area and lightly rake the seed under a thin cover of topsoil.

4. The forth step is to add water via hose or sprinkler to the soil to ensure that the area stays moist, which will promote germination of the seed.

5. Kept moist, you should begin to see new grass shoots within 2 weeks. At this point, we would recommend that you sprinkle a natural fertilizer such as Morganite over the entire area.

6. After a few weeks, you should overseed the new area in bare spots by sprinkling new grass seed to fill in any voids.

7. Enjoy your new lawn.

The solution depends on the garden design that you would prefer.

1. A simple, in the ground solution garden is the fastest and most cost-effective way to establish a vegetable garden. Cultivation of the ground is the first step, if you are converting lawn to garden area, several passes with our rototiller attachment will usually grind up everything quite nicely. Many people opt to install a fence around the garden area to protect against pets or critters. The most cost effect fencing solution is steel fence posts driven into the ground and 4 foot farm fencing is attached to the posts. Install a larger wood post to support a gate and you have a garden area ready for spring planting.

2. A more elaborate approach would be to have an enclosed raised bed garden. Many people opt for creating a garden area with wood chips, pea gravel or hog fuel as a ground cover medium. This is easily achieved by marking off the perimeter of the garden area, laying a heavy landscape fabric over the area and then installing the chosen ground cover. Once the ground cover is raked out uniformly, fencing and gates can be installed. The final step would be to construct garden boxes to fit your garden area. While we don't construct raised bed boxes, we can help you should aosme companies that can if required.

For fallow farm pastures or fields, we usually recommend a plow and rototill approach. Deeply rooted native field grass usually establishes itself quickly along with a multitude of unwanted weeds and flower species.

Plowing the area with our moldboard plow will tear up the ground and overturn it at the same time, uprooting native vegetation and grass. The overturned roots will begin to die off within a week or so. but the ground should be left for at least a couple weeks.

The next step is to rototill the plowed ground which will smooth out the ground, leaving it ready for spring planting.
